Sometimes we think, why a bike is not run by diesel. If there is a diesel motorcycle than we can save some money because the price of petrol is higher than diesel. The only bike with diesel engine bike sold in india was Royal Enfield tauras but today there are no bike available with diesel engine Today I am going to tell you some reasons why diesel engines are not used in bikes.
Heavier in size The diesel engine are much heavier in size compared to petrol engine with the same capacity. The diesel engine has a high compression ratio. It must be bigger to handle this high compression ratio. The bulky size of these engines does not make them suitable for small vehicles like motorbikes.
Vibratioons Due to the high compression ratio, the diesel engine produces more
vibration. It is not possible for a light vehicle to handle this high
vibration. That’s why diesel engines are not used in motorbikes.
Production Cost Due to the high compression ratio and heavy engine, the production
cost of the diesel engine is high. This high cost constrains the usage of
the diesel engine in motorbikes.
Higher Emissions:Diesel engine emits
approximately 13% more carbon dioxide per gallon as compared to the petrol
engine.
High Maintenance: The diesel
engine works on high pressure, which leads to increased wear and tear. This
results in higher maintenance costs as compared to petrol engines.
Heating Issue: The diesel engine produces a large amount of
heat during its operation. So to reduce this heat, we need a dedicated cooling
system. Adding a cooling system adds to the weight and overall cost.
Turbocharging & Supercharging: A diesel engine uses turbocharger or
supercharger to pump more air into the cylinder, which again increases its
price and size.
Fuel injection: In diesel engines, fuel injectors are used to inject fuel into the combustion chamber, which is more expensive than the carburetor used in petrol engines
Starting Issue: Due to the bigger size of the diesel engine it uses high power starting motor to crank the engine, which is not possible in motorbikes.
